Day 4 of Lap 4

Kilmelford to Kilchoan

Strong gusts throughout the day affected both the cycling and the ferry crossings. The wind was favourable at times but in other stretches it was definitely against and tiring. A 6:30 start ensured that traffic was light and gave just enough time to book a ticket and board the 8:30 ferry from Oban at about 8:10 (with foot passengers and before vehicles). The state of the wind sock at the arrival port of Craignure warned of the struggles ahead on the bike.

The usual stop in Salen at The Coffee Pot was good for an enjoyable coffee and recovery, about half way between the ports of Craignure and Tobermory on Mull.

The Tobermory annual Streat Festival was worth a visit, with live music and local produce on sale from stalls. The Tobermory bakery provided further opportunities to replace calories; their sourdough bread is "moreish".

The small ferry from Tobermory was rolling in the waves, many with white horses. The ferry left a little late because of the abnormally low tide and the danger of hitting rocks. Here at the campsite at Kilchoan the continuing wind made the pitching of the tent tricky, but on the positive side the soaked tent was quick to dry.

Stats for the day were a distance of 40 miles with 2480 feet of ascent and 1380 active calories. The finish in the early afternoon should allow recovery for a bigger day tomorrow.
